“If you’re lucky enough to live by the lake, you’re lucky enough...”
This rings true for the residents of the Sylvan Lake community which numbers approximately 190 homes. Sylvan Lake is a 32 acre man-made lake in Fremont Township, managed by the Sylvan Lake Improvement Association (S.L.I.A.), a group of elected resident officials who oversee the management of the lake.
S.L.I.A. frequently monitors water quality and the upkeep of the many parks and easements, including the highly utilized beach area. The creation and distribution of the community newsletter, The Shoreline and the updating of the S.L.I.A. website, www.slia.net., ensure that all residents are informed about current and future improvements and projects.
The variety of mature trees and wooded shoreline create a habitat conducive to wildlife. Over the last 18 years, 128 species of birds have been seen at or flying above Sylvan Lake. Coyotes, deer, raccoons, muskrats, and opossums are natural inhabitants of the area. Many resident fishermen frequently catch bass, crappie, blue gills, and grass carp. A current plan is underway to have a long-term structured fish-stocking program to promote the recreational fishing for generations to come.
Native plants can be found throughout the community and resident naturalists regularly educate the community on how to encourage native plant growth in the woodlands and easements. This also has resulted in a reduction of shore erosion.
Our beach is one of the greatest amenities of our community and of the lake. Area residents take great pride in maintaining, updating, and improving our beach. In 2005, with the help of some handy residents, a deck was constructed rising above the shoreline, offering a great spot for residents to gather and enjoy the scenery. Residents have worked hard replacing the current pier system which was installed in May of 2006. Along with the new pier came an area for boat docking and storage. S.L.I.A. is currently evaluating the possible construction of a “beach house” in the location of the current maintenance and storage shed. The tentative plan hopes to include amenities that will make the time spent at the beach more pleasurable for all families.
Fishing, swimming, and non-motorized boating are activities that are enjoyed by all. The combination of this unique environment, the wealth of outdoor activities, the many opportunities for fellowship, as well as the commitment to maintain this special body of water, make Sylvan Lake a wonderful place to live.
